2016 BMW 5-Series facelift, redesign, price – The current model of the 5-Series has been somewhat lacking in the driving pleasure all the previous models were able to provide and because of that it was not a great seller for BMW. The model has been released back in 2011 and instead of releasing a new mid-life update, the German manufacturer is actually going to release an all new car with the new BMW 5-Series 2016. This will be released to the public some time in the end of 2016 while the car will actually be available for sale starting with 2017. Until then, the current model will have to do despite the fact it is not as good as we would want.

Let’s move to the upcoming model. Unlike what most people thought, it seems that BMW is going to use the same modular platform as that of the 3-Series. This means that the new model of the 2016 BMW 5-Series should be quite a bit lighter than before as well as more rigid. On top of that, the new platform also means new engines as well as new materials. The body will be made mostly out of aluminum while its chassis as well as the safety cells around the car will be made mostly out of carbon fiber which is unique in its class. However, because of these new materials the base price could see an increase to around $54,000 which is still good if BMW manages to deliver a great driver’s car.

The exterior is currently under wraps but a model of the 2016 BMW 5-Series has been spied not too long ago wearing heavy camouflage. This shows a slightly longer and wider car than before which seems to be a bit lower. The front end looks all new with a larger kidney-grille and slimmer headlights. The back end seems to be a bit higher than usual which could mean more luggage space or a potential hybrid car with a rear mounted battery pack. The end design will be revealed to the public some time in the mid or late 2016.

Inside the cabin, the new BMW 5-Series 2016 will include all the newest technologies from BMW, starting with the all-new iDrive system and ending up with the head-up display and fully digital instrument cluster. The room on the back seats will be improved thanks to the new platform while in the front the passengers will get heated and ventilated seats as standard which is quite a premium feature, even in this class.

Under the hood of the 2016 BMW 5-Series there should be quite a few new engines which are going to please a lot of car lovers. The base model will come in the US with a modified N55 3 liter inline 6 which will provide around 335 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque which is quite impressive. However, there are rumors that a special 550i M Division edition could make use of the same engine powering the M3, a 3.0 liter twin-turbo inline 6 with more than 410 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

It is unclear for now what type of engine the M5 will use but considering the downsizing trend, we expect a 3.0 liter inline 6 twin-turbo hybrid which could put to the ground more than 600 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Even though this approach is a bit more unusual, it would allow BMW to keep the fuel consumption in check, all while offering the same amount of power as the older model and even more torque available from 0 RPM due to its electric motors. Plug-in capability could also be added to the M5 which would highly improve its day to day fuel consumption mostly because the inline 6 engine would remain turned off.
